Cypress is also used as a natural deodorant, insect repellant, and mild sedative (although it can also be stimulating).

It helps rid the body of cellulite and restores moisture to aging skin.

Scientific studies

Cypress contains antimicrobial properties that make it a good natural preservative for food, cosmetics, and other products.

Cypress leaves are also astringent and contain high levels of flavonoids. Flavonoids scavenge harmful radicals in our cells, protecting them from cell mutation and disease.

  • Cypress leaves are used for stomach pain, diabetes, inflammation, toothache, sore throat, laryngitis, and as a contraceptive.
  • Dried cypress seeds are used in the treatment of wounds, bruises, sores, skin problems, and ulcers.
  • Cypress essential oil is used for headache, cods, flu, cough, and bronchitis.

Cypress essential oil is distilled from the leaves. Studies show that the antimicrobial activity of the oil is stronger against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. The oil also inhibits the attachment of bacteria to tissue surfaces, thus reducing infections.

Different types of cypress

Cypress essential oil is made from European cypress. The Florida or pond cypress is a different species.

Cypress trees are tough. They can withstand drought and high winds. They have a well developed root system and the ability to grow in acidic or alkaline soil.
