Obesity and hormonal changes contribute to prostate problems. A healthy diet with lots of fiber can help reduce chances of prostate enlargement and other problems.

Eat lots of wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, oatmeal, oat bran, brewer's yeast, sesame seeds, and sea vegetables for a healthy prostate.

Avoid milk, dairy products, processed meats, fatty meat, fried foods, refined foods, colas, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, sugar, and over-the-counter antihistamines.

Saw palmetto for the prostate

Saw palmetto is especially effective for treating an enlarged prostate. Start treatment as soon as possible. Symptoms can be greatly reduced if herbal treatments are started early and continue over a period of several months.

Due to bitter taste, saw palmetto is usually taken in diluted tincture or capsule form.

Prostate problems as men age

Prostate disorders usually do not develop until after the age of thirty-five. By age fifty, up to 25% of all men have an enlarged prostate. By age seventy, 50% of men experience this condition. After the age of eighty, the number rises to over 80%.

Enlarged prostate is an epidemic in the population of elderly men.

Symptoms of prostate disorders include loss of sexual drive.

Symptoms of prostate disorders include frequent urination, painful urination, reduced flow of urine, incontinence, fever, lower back pain, leg pain, impotence, loss of libido, reduced immunity, unusual insomnia, and fatigue.

Taking immunity building herbs like ginseng can help reduce stress and protect the prostate.

Prostate disorders sometimes develop after prolonged periods of stress.

Immunity building herbs should be taken any time a person experiences a crisis situation such as loss of a loved one, reduced income, or other trauma.

Ginseng, yellowroot, Echinacea, dandelion, milk thistle seed, licorice, and astragalus are recommended and should be taken on a regular basis.

For prostate health, get some exercise every day.

Sitting for long periods can cause decreased circulation and may lead to prostrate problems. Get some exercise every day. St. John's Wort, prickly ash, and horse chestnut can help improve circulation.

Old time prostate tonic recipes that help heal

A simple prostate tonic can be made with lemon juice and water. Drink a glass every morning for two weeks. During the next four weeks, drink a mixture of water, cider vinegar, and honey every morning.

Fruit juices and lots of water are good for the whole body. Too much citrus can aggravate kidney and bladder problems so limit orange and grapefruit juice to one six ounce serving per day.

Other herbs for the prostate

Certain herbs are recommended for continued prostate health. Saw palmetto, horsetail, white deadnettle, stinging nettle, corn silk, hydrangea, and couch grass are known to protect and heal the prostate.

Vitamin E, iodine, potassium, and zinc supplements are also beneficial. Read about the importance of vitamins and minerals here.

What do the scientist say?

Enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) comes with aging, as the ratio of testosterone to estrogen changes and enzymes levels that cause cell growth in the prostrate increases.

Herbal remedies are shown to help. The most often cited are pumpkin seed, willow, tomato, maritime pine bark, rye pollen, saw palmetto fruit, nettle roots, and Pygeum africanum bark.

When the prostate becomes enlarged, the urinary stream is affected in several ways including reduced flow, urinary retention, and terminal dribbling.

Healthcare professionals agree that the first line of treatment is the use of herbs. Next is prescription medicine, then surgery.

Pumpkin seed oil is shown to help urinary problems. With high levels of polysaccharides, sterols, fatty acids, proteins, peptides, and other beneficial components, pumpkin seed oil is anti-tumor, anti-arthritis, and has antioxidant effects. This works to tone the prostate, bladder, and urethra.

Pumpkin seed oil is really potent when used along with saw palmetto. This herbal blend can relieve symptoms of enlarged prostate, but must be used on a regular basis.

Read more about the benefits of pumpkin here.

When more serious conditions like cancer are ruled out, doctors often recommend that patients with enlarged prostate start taking saw palmetto, although it may take up to a year before results are noticed. Try mixing with pumpkin seed oil for faster relief.

Tomatoes, full of lycopene, can also help relieve enlarged prostate. Powerful antioxidants and carotenoids in tomato fruits can affect cell growth by reducing inflammation and reducing the size of the prostate. Don't eat too many tomatoes though! Too much of a good thing can have harmful effects including acid reflux, kidney problems, irritable bowel syndrome, body aches, and arthritis.

Maritime pine bark extract, also known as Pycnogenol, is useful when treating a variety of chronic diseases including enlarged prostate. Pychogenol is a powerful free radical scavenger that is proved to help age related problems (including erectile dysfunction).

Use white oak to reduce prostate swelling

Some herbs benefit specific prostate problems.

  • Take white oak or willow to shrink swelling.
  • Use nettle in cases of frequent urination.
  • Use Pau d'arco, borage, evening primrose, or black currant for inflammation.
  • Try corn silk tea when a diuretic is needed to increase urine flow.
  • When infection is present, eat lots of raw garlic and raw pineapple (or take bromelain enzyme supplements).
  • Pain may be relieved with a warm herbal bath followed by an application of ice pack for three or four minutes.
  • Never soak in a hot tub for too long. Heat can cause fertility and prostate problems.

Tips for improving sperm count

Another prostate problem in today's society is low sperm count. Low sperm count can be improved by wearing boxer shorts instead of tight briefs. Avoid exposure to high heat for prolonged periods of time (especially hot saunas).

Try splashing testicles with cold water every morning. This can significantly raise sperm counts in just a few weeks.

*Always consult with your healthcare professional before taking any herbal remedy especially if pregnant, nursing, or taking other medication.
